‘Scrap It’ Food Waste Recycling Program (Buffalo, NY)

On October 28th, Mayor Byron W. Brown and Delaware District Council Member Joel Feroleto, joined by Susan Attridge, Director of Refuse and Recycling, and representatives from the neighborhood tested out a new outdoor receptacle that includes space to deposit trash, recycling and food scraps. The new receptacle, located at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Bidwell Parkway, further expands Mayor Brown’s ‘Scrap It’ Food Waste Recycling program, providing City residents with a year-round opportunity to dispose of their food scraps in a safe, environmentally friendly way. All food scraps collected are recycled by our partner Natural Upcycling.

“Thanks to City residents and in partnership with Council Member Feroleto, the City of Buffalo is pleased to further expand our food waste recycling program, called ‘Scrap It’, by installing the first year-round outdoor drop-off recycling receptacle that includes food scraps,” stated Mayor Brown. “There’s a lot of food that is thrown out and that’s a lot of landfill space that can be saved and a lot of food waste that can be composted. I thank residents for recycling their food waste and encourage them to continue to support our 34andMore Buffalo Recycles program.”

Mayor Byron W. Brown proclaimed November 15th America Recycles Day in the City of Buffalo! He issued the proclamation at Dash’s Market on Hertel Avenue, where he hosted a Community Plastic Bag Recycling Collection event. Plastic bags were cited as a top contaminant in the green recycling totes in the City’s Waste Characterization Study. Every person who brought plastic bags to the event received an eco-friendly reusable bag from the City of Buffalo and Dash’s Market, and were entered to win a Dash’s gift card.
